Jacaranda season

Brisbane is famous for it's beautiful Jacaranda trees, that come into bloom at this time of year.  The Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) is actually a Brazilian tree, not native to Australia!  One of the best places to see some lovely trees is down by the riverside in West End, where I happened to be today for the Great Brisbane Duck race!

Not sure where my ducky family placed, but we didn't win.  Totally crazy, but its not every day you see several thousand rubber ducks going hell for leather down the Brisbane river.

The riverside entertainment was a bit 'quackers' too...

A few little ducks made a break for freedom after the race. Swim duckies, swim!!

  1. The jacarandas are beautiful and the duck race looks fun. I hope you continue to enjoy your kayaking on Moreton bay - and maybe elsewhere as well!

  2. I love the jacarandas here - they're my favourite tree and October is my favourite month because of it. I had no idea about a rubber duck race in Brissy! Funny how you can live a good portion of your life in a city and still not know even half its secrets :)

  3. Hi (C) thanks for stopping by - it is funny how much goes on in Brissie that slips under the radar, we find it a particularly hard city to 'get to know' for that reason - its not always easy to find out what is going on but stuff is happening all over... just need to keep that ear to the ground I guess!

  4. Have just returned to my blog today after a lengthy absence & on reading this post, am amazed to learn of a 'Great Brisbane Duck Race'. I'd never heard of it & can't believe it!! What a great idea for a bit of community fun. I'm guessing it's some sort of fund-raiser as well.
